1356– Battle of Poitiers – An English army under the command of Edward the Black Prince defeats a French army and captures the French King John II.  Edwards victories made him popular, and In 1348 he became the first Knight of the Garter, of whose Order he was one of the founders.  Unfortunately for Edward he died before his father, becoming the first English Prince of Wales not to become King of England.
